Arsenal Medical Team

First before ill start, I will give you guys a quick introduction about myself. My name is Paul and I am 16 years old. I live in Germany and started a Physiotherapist apprenticeship in August 2015. Since I study a medical job, I am very interested in Arsenals injured Players.

Now let’s move on to the more interesting part. As I have seen a lot complaints about Arsenals medical Team, I thought I’ll write a small Article about it. Before I start I want to make clear that this is how I see the situation of Arsenals Medical Team. The Gunners have had a lot of injured Players over the past few years, and we, the Fans were often angry about how our Medical Team kept players out for Weeks or even Months. Of course it is frustrating to see the team struggle with these injuries, and sometimes these injuries can affect our season. But being a Doctor or a Physiotherapist at such a big Club like Arsenal isn’t as easy as it seems. Fans only get a small amount of information about injured players, so they only know what injury the player has and how long he will be out for.

Being an apprentice in Physiotherapy, I know that Sport injuries can take a long time to heal. It take so long to heal, because when the player starts to train again too early it can cause scar formation in any kind of layer ( like Muscles…), which can bring back the injury or a similar one later on. That’s why the Arsenal Medical Team keep injured players out for so long because they want them fully fit again so there are no injuries that come back again. Of course we (the Fans) are frustrated and angry, but I am pretty sure that the Medical Team try their hardest to bring back the Player fully recovered and as fast as possible. Players like Danny Welbeck or Jack Wilshere need their time to recover. It is not only the medical part of recovery but also the training part to get back in form.

Now let’s move on to players getting injured and why. Some players get injured more often than others, but that’s (as I said above, my opinion) not only the clubs fault. Every player is different than the other and so are the risks of injuries. Injuries can be caused because of the age or health conditions etc. For example, Jack Wilshire has a higher risk of injury than Per Mertesacker. In that example, it’s not the age but as we all know Jack has had a lot of injuries over the years, and that could be because of his many injuries, that he injures himself a lot more often than Per who never had that many injuries.

Sometimes, like in Aaron Ramseys case it’s because of International Duty or too many games played. Most of our injured players are out for an average of 25 days, which is not that long if you think about it. Also 83% of them are less than 30 Days. Aaron Ramsey currently has a Hamstring injurie. A minor muscle pull or strain (grade 1) may take a few days to heal, whereas it could take weeks or months to recover from a muscle tear (grade 2 or 3). Aaron is going to be out for about 4 weeks which isn’t that long if he has a grade 2-3 muscle tear. So if you think about it, our Medical Team is doing their best to bring back players as fast as possible, and they are in my opinion, doing a great job.
