Leaked transfer documents show that Mesut Özil's initial fee was €44m, spread out over three instalments: €24m on 2 Sep 2013, €15m on 30 Sep 2014, and €5m on 30 Sep 2015. Our initial fee of £35.74m reflects the historic currency rates on these dates. Leaked documents also show that there is a potential €6m in performance bonuses, of which €2m has been paid as of 26 Jan 2016.

This transfer fee is often disputed, media reports vary from £7m initial fee all the way up to £15m initial fee. "There was a discount clause if Arsenal paid early and when we contacted them to sort it all out they said: 'Why don’t we settle it up now?' "When you include the discount for early payment, Arsenal have already paid £4.8m for Ramsey."

Dinamo president Mirko Barisic claims the fee amounts to £16.25m but BBC Sport understands it is around £7.5m.

This was a drawn out saga in Norway, with Nordtveit's club asking for 20 million Norwegian kroners (£1.7m at the time), Arsenal not willing to pay that much for an initial fee. The clubs later compromised with a £500k initial fee and £1.5m after 40 first team appearances (something Nordtveit never managed).

In Theo Walcott's biography, he details the transfer fee: "In the end, Arsenal agreed to increase their bid to £12 million. That was £7 million immediately and £5 million in add-ons depending on how many games I played for Arsenal, whether I played for England and things like that."
