Arsenal Report v4

Ok here's the deal: the site is getting a visual makeover and will have a handful of new features added (and some removed). I already have a list of ideas ranging from super cool to super dumb, but before I get started I want to hear your ideas for how we can improve the site.

Best of all: We're giving away THREE Arsenal shirts to participants in this thread, as thanks for getting involved. Home, away, third...your choice. I'll pick two winners based on their suggestions, and then let's do the third one random.

Sounds good? Good. Get started. I'm open to any suggestions, ranging from colour schemes to brand new features to suggestions about removing stuff...really anything. I'm mostly interested in how we can make the Transfer Centre and Injury Room better, as those are our primary features, but again...open to anything.

Here's a summary of (realistic) ideas so far:

  • Lineup/Formation maker (like lineupbuilder and all those, but something that doesn't look like absolute dog shit)
  • Historic kits
  • Countdown timer to next game
  • Arse-O-Pedia (Arsenal encyclopedia)
  • St Totteringham's Day through history
  • Suspensions section
  • Activity based forum karma points (you lose points for not being active)
  • WYSIWYG for posts and comments
  • All-time trophy room
  • Positivity index (perhaps based on #WengerOut trends)
  • Quiz
  • Videos section
  • Transfer Centre: ROI chart
  • Transfer Centre: Countdown timer to transfer window
  • Transfer Centre: Transfer rumours and linked player
  • Injury Room: % of first team squad matches lost to injury, overall and by position
  • Comment previews before posting
  • News feed
  • Injury comparisons between all Premier League clubs

Transfer Centre can have a linked section where players we're linked with are listed. It can have their last season's performance stats or squawka index ratings etc.... And a it can also double as a poll where members select which linked player they want most.

Scheme and colors are visually great for me. As for Transfer Centre you can add transfer rumours and the most linked ones, as well as the most likely to arrive, etc. Extra: you could add a jersey section and run polls to pick your favorite one and also add most significant changes over the years.

For Transfer Centre:

  • Show target players with club, position, age, release clause, transfermarkt.com value, rating of likelihood or key sources of rumors
  • Let community rate how much they want a player, say what they think Arsenal should spend or how likely they think it is to happen; show averages & show in order
  • List players currently on roster rumored to be for sale or to go out on loan
  • Track historical signings/sales and market value changes over next few years
  • Countdown timer to end of transfer window/start of next window

For Injury Room:

  • Show matches missed in addition to days out
  • Estimate return dates in details & status table
  • % of first team squad matches lost to injury, overall and by position to see where we've been hit hardest
  • % of time a player has lost to injury while at Arsenal -- normalize the other stats relative to tenure
  • Some sort of on stage of return e.g. if they have returned to training, playing with reserves, etc.
  • Updated pictures of Alexis' discolored ankle as it goes through the full rainbow and returns back to normal

Other miscellaneous stuff:

  • A-Z archive of Arsenal players & link to profile (here or from wikipedia etc.)
  • Gallery of home/away/third shirts worn by year
  • Add a tab with your Twitter feed

Arse-o-pedia: let people contribute to history of club or a glossary with things like Lasagne-gate, £40m plus £1, Invincibles

Show number of consecutive years we've finished ahead of Spurs, chart with historical relative finishes

It would be great to add some kind of ROI linked to the spending. We all talk about how spending money equals success, but what are the raw statistics based on that. It could be net spend or total. Ideally we would compare it to other clubs spending that season. You could compare lots of statistics with that like points accrued, games won, goals scored or conceded etc

Thinking about that, perhaps using the databases you have built you could create a simple analytics comparison system that allows the user to compare a couple of attributes. It could then output a graph that could be embedded in a post or shared over social with a comment.

Additionally I like the idea above of allowing users to build a formation/team (like the old tactics posts you used to write used), perhaps with some arrows to help explain points or suggest team lineups.

I think it would be great still to have a calendar of matches that automatically create an official match thread for comment the day of the game. It would then display a count down and allow voting. I know you did something like that previously and I thought it was great, just needed more features to get people engaged.

Another section of the site should be similar to the injury room, except for suspensions (Yellow and Red cards). How much time is missed through suspension. Who are the worst culprits etc.

The points on people's profiles could be season based. Perhaps rather than actual points you increase your ranking in the league table based on activity. Then if you do not post or interact you lose points and so drop down the table. You could build in divisions and winners achieve trophies each season. Then maybe you link it to the match threads, so if people interact in EPL threads they get league points and FA Cup they get cup points etc.

A clean Wisiwig would be easier rather than the Markdown.

It would be great to add a page that lists all of Arsenals cups, including some overall totals. I know you would make it looks sweet.

I think it would be cool if you done a page about the History of the club from 1886. A timeline perhaps could be cool about the key things that have happened at the club since it's inception. There are a lot of people that are proud of Arsenal's hostory and many fans that don't know too much about the past so that would be a great idea.

How about a positivity index, tack the fans positivity over a season. No idea how you would do it, probably would be really bias if it was just a vote, but if you could somehow find a metric to do it it would be quite interesting.

Twitter trends maybe...would probably be quite easy to just base it on #WengerOut count trends.

We actually already have an early stage version of this! http://www.arsenalreport.com/events

It's a bit buggy and I haven't gotten very far...but the general idea is there.

I loved the original design of this site from the beginning - modern and slick. There are little things you can do to enhance it visually (e.g. as you scroll and different sections show, the words/titles have a slight upwards animation so it cushions in its set place like on spotify's website, or have a fixed menu on the left/right that doesn't move whilst scrolling, or word clouds from Twitter based on #arsenal) but otherwise it's always looked good.

Features? I think what everyone here has said are all good ideas. Having a 'gossip column' is always clickbait, but if you can sift through the noise and rate the likelihood of its veracity (maybe visually making the list fade to background colour depending on strength of the rumour) Arsenal fans like me would flock!

We need real clickbait. We need clickable voodoo dolls of swine like wenger, kroenke, Gazidis, spurs, and manure.

As others said, the site design is already awesome. Please waste your spend time changing it when I'm sure you could build so many cool features in that time instead.

Anything to encourage more conversation in the forums would be great... the reason I come back is to read new posts.

I think a quiz section will go down well, potential topics could go season by season or on club legends or new players

Also a video section wouldn't go amiss i.e match report or in depth player analysis similar to the "breakdown" done by Adrian Clarke just short 3/4 minute videos highlighting key moments or controversial decisions that spark a bit of debate and interaction between fans
