January 2015 Transfer Window

What are we hoping for, apart from a centre-back and perhaps a Schwarzenegger-sized defensive midfielder? Obviously hoping for Varane and Pogba, but will probably end up with Vlaar and Schneiderlin.

Good enough?

In terms of squad depth, we are dangerously low on central defenders even when all of them are fit, so that's an area where we have to strengthen. It's simply not feasible to challenge for any sort of trophy with only two recognised centre-backs, I have no idea what Wenger was thinking on the last day of the summer window. Going into a Premier League season with only two natural CBs is madness.

Apart from that, we do have good depth in almost all other positions. As in: depth in numbers, not necessarily in quality. However, I don't think Wenger believes this is true, so I doubt he will strengthen any of the attacking positions.

The only position outside CB that could need a boost is, as the OP says, defensive midfield. Although Arteta and Flamini should be able to cover that position, neither are physically imposing, and the latter is currently being unfairly singled out as the scapegoat even though his teammates fail to support him properly.

If we only sign a CB it will be an ok January. If we sign both a CB and a DM, it will be a good January. I wouldn't hope for more though.

Take my word, he will not recruit any DM player but i think he will go for PL experiences-not cup tied (Reid or Vlaar). Then again he although not strenghten the squad but he will beat the odds and win another trophy (4thplace if you in case you dont know)

Podolski is gone, and if we let Joel and Sanogol on loan... We are left with Giroud/Teo/Welbeck/Alexis That look short, and sill after our injury period.

The whole loaning out of Poldi/Sanogo/Joel is odd, if true. As you say it leaves us short in the forward positions. Sure, we only play with one central forward, but we also use wide poachers that are usually converted strikers.

If those three leave:

RW: Theo, Sanchez, Gnabry, Ox
CF: Giroud, Welbeck, ?
LW: Cazorla, Ozil?

Alexis and Theo can play on the left, but who is backup for Giroud? We end up having to use players out of position again. If Giroud is injured, Sanchez will move to CF, etc. It's this constant shifting around of players that is hurting our consistency.

Only four of those seven players would play in their natural positions among the ones listed above. Cazorla is being played as CM, AM, LW...Ozil is the best #10 in the world but is being played as LW, Ox doesn't even know what position he's supposed to play (listen to him in interviews asking about that).

We need to have our players start in their favoured positions on a regular basis, which means we need to have strength in depth.

Sanchez needs to be the wide option in a front three, that is where he is most dangerous and helpful. His tracking back is perfect on the flank. As CF he tracks back too much and we're left without a spearhead.

Ozil needs to be played as a traditional #10, not even a debate.

Welbeck needs to be a centre-forward. In the beginning of the season when playing there, he was quickly growing into the role, he was thriving. He was making excellent runs, clever passes and had a spark about him we haven't seen in Giroud for some time. Then as soon as Giroud comes back, Welbeck is moved to the flank where he underperforms, and suddenly seen as mediocre.

Cazorla needs to stay in the middle of the pitch. Granted, he has performed well on the flank at times, but at the end of the day it's not his natural position. If Ozil is playing, put Cazorla on the bench.

And most of all: Chambers needs to be a CB. He is excellent at it. At the start of the season he was growing into that role rapidly, similar to Welbeck's early progress. Then he is shifted around as soon as players become fit. He will become a great CB in the future, but he needs to play there to gain experience.

I'm frankly sick of this positional game Wenger is playing.

Right flank looks absolutely fine. Centre-forward is ok as long as we don't get any injuries. Left flank is abysmal though. We have no natural left wingers at the club, which is embarrassing when playing a system heavily depending on wide players.

Brings me back to best possible shape based on current personnel: 4-3-1-2. Why play a wide system if we don't have wide players?

Let be serious, Gnabry and Theo haven't played competitive football for 1 year. Chuba hardly played in first team, other then Cazorla, others dont belong on LW. Podolski was best offensive left winger that we had for some time.

A verry hard and demanding period is coming for the squad. We need to get stronger not weaker. Front of Teo-Giroud-Alexis look great on paper but we need cover. We need to fix this damn season.
