Wenger In....

Posted by danielson116 over 7 years ago · 20 replies

Think we all know what happened by now, but for everyone living under a rock, Wenger just signed a 2-year extension. Any thoughts? Personally, I've been Wenger out for most of this year, but with the 3-4-3 switch working I feel hopeful for next year (even though this same pattern of hopefulness happens every year....).

Without a strong reinforcement in Attack, we don't challenge for the Title and will end up as also ran-ins...

Giroud, Wellbeck, Perez seems good as a backup, but not a talisman we want to lead our attack next season...

Opta Stats

790 - Arsene Wenger has taken charge of 790 Premier League games as a manager; only Sir Alex Ferguson has managed more (810). Longevity.

Would rather Wenger have left on a high, but looks like the club have the management skills of a chromosome deficient jizz-monkey, and not planned for a successor.

Pros: Looks like Wenger can actually change up his tactics and has finally found a formation that harnesses the best aspects from his personnel. This enables him to actually play most of his best players and not have them playing out of position. Ox improving each game. Ramsey starting to look good again. Ozil and Sanchez more likely to stay on now that Wenger is continuing.

Cons: Wenger's points tally each season is consistently not high enough to win the league, unless everyone else also falters. There is no sign he can change this either. Will not spend overspend to get that one or two marquee signing(s) we need up top. Cazorla still out.

Wenger is planning on selling 9 players in the summer including Coquelin, Wilshere, Szczesny, Debuchy, Jenkinson, Gibbs, Perez, Yaya Sanogo, and Ospina.

Just to get more funds for the summer.

Gibbs: Doubt it

With Kolasinac coming in as a fresh LM/LWB, Gibbs' role is going to be pretty overshadowed. He was already frustrated at the end of the season, so I wouldn't be surprised if he left.

you can't expect such a huge transfer haul from Wenger, like how Pep is doing at ManCity now..

But certain players will leave... Debuchy, Jenkinson, Ospina, Giibs/Monreal and may be Perez...

I'd rather keep Moreal than Gibbs because he is more versatile, consistent, and less injury prone.

i'd keep monreal because he's playing more of a LCB role instead of a LB, and he's adapting to it well, like how azpi adapted at Chelsea.

If we keep playing the 3-4-3 we shouldn't get rid of either of them. We need 5-6 centre-backs in the squad to deploy a 3-4-3. Monreal is one of those 5-6 CBs, if needed.

CBs:

  • Koscielny
  • Mustafi
  • Holding
  • Mertesacker
  • Monreal
  • Gabriel

LWBs:

  • Gibbs
  • Kolasinac

RWBs:

  • Bellerin
  • Ox

It all works out fine with both Gibbs and Nacho staying.

in that case, we may need to bring in another quality CB ???

Not necessarily, Chambers is coming back and there is also Bielik coming through. Ball playing centre backs will suit a 3-at-the-back system.

Yeah I mean we currently have 8 capable centre-backs at the club, I think we'll be fine in that department.

I think a true striker is a bigger priority but I wouldn't mind bringing in someone experienced in CB as well

Onyekuru is a good option but is unproven. Could be the unexpected rise to fame.

I'm realizing Nigeria are exporting a lot of talented youngsters: Iwobi, Iheanacho, Nwakali, Onyekuru, Ndidi, even Ahmed Musa.
