Thanks!

You know what would be particularly sensual? A Chrome extension the shows you when you have unread posts...

Happy day for all you who want a better unread system! Completely re-done, should work much better now.

v2.4 - Charlie George (6 Jul 2015)
- Completely revamped unread/subscriptions system
- Threads now subscribed through posting comment, upvoting or clicking bookmark in top right
- Threads can be unsubscribed by clicking the bookmark icon again
- Clicking a post title now brings you to the last unread comment
- Better separation between read and unread posts
- Performance tweaks and code cleanup
- AMA functionality tweaked and improved so we can start AMAs soon
- Improved moderation controls
- Added 'other articles' to end of blog article pages
- Small change to post upvoting to see if we can get more people using it
- Player arrival fix so site won't break in between adding new player and his arrival transfer

Hmm kinda of annoying that I no longer see unread topics now. I'd have to go through each topic and subscribe to all of them which would take ages.

Only scalable way forward that I know of. In the previous systems the default mode was everything unread, with a model created for every post per user. For every new user, X views would be created where X was the number of posts created. In this system the default mode is zero until user subscribes, so no unnecessary rows in the database. It can still be optimised for performance, but theoretically it should be better at scale.

You are subscribed to a thread if you either:

  • Post a comment in it
  • Upvote it (from the forum view)
  • Click the bookmark icon

Right now it's a bit weird since I'm not retroactively assigning subscriptions, and it requires a slight change in user behaviour to start making sense again. Hopefully this will steer people into participating more in threads or upvoting stuff they like or find interesting.

I could actually create a 'subscribe all' toggle on the forum that automatically subscribes you to every thread created. Off by default, naturally.

Sites like Reddit give no indication at all as to what post is new, or if there has been activity since you were last there. From that perspective we're actually already better at letting you know about activity.

Added auto-subscribe toggle 4 U. Clicking it adds all current threads to your subscription list, and auto subscribes to all new posts. Clicking it again just takes you out of the auto-subscription, you will still be subscribed to all previous posts.

Next step is a /subscriptions page where you see all posts you have subscribed to. On this page you'll be able to opt out of subscription, either one by one or all threads.

Hopefully that's a good compromise.

I think you need to gamify the upvoting in some way and make it much more prominent. Good that you removed down voting.

I'm very excited about the changes to the unread system. Can't wait to see them in action.

But I have noticed some small things I thought i'd share. There is no possibility to upvote posts on the mobile platform (I'm on an iPhone 6), so there should at least be a possibility to switch to the regular version.

Also after seeing the new AMA announced (also very cool) I miss the ability to start formulating and asking questions already now. I mean: I might forget about it tomorrow, or just forget what I wanted to ask. Right now I've got some questions ready that I would want to submit.

Yeah good shout, I'll look into displaying upvoting on mobile.

Yeah not sure why I did it like that. Opening it now.

There should be a way to see what you have to do to get the achievements. I was curious about a badge just now and clicked it. Then I was taken to a new screen where I had to look for the badge which said: "original member" what does this mean? Who counts as an original member? I've been a member of 39t since day 3 or 4 and of dial square/arsenalreport since day 1 and don't have the badge. Just curious :P

One more thing: when a thread is marked with "0 unread posts" you should be sent to the last post on the last page when clicking the title. To get a quick recap of the state of the discussion before you write what you were planning on writing

Good idea, hovering over the badges should probably trigger a nice looking tooltip with explanation on how to get that badge. Original member = anyone who signed up to Dial Square before 1 Jan 2015 (we launched Dec 25/26).

Rich tooltips added, should be clearer how a badge has been achieved now.
