Buying Ozil was a mistake

Posted by TopTopQuality over 9 years ago · 126 replies

Ozil was a last minute panic buy by Wenger. A player in a position we didn't need to strengthen. He isn't playing to his best ability at Arsenal either. His main strength is through balls to fast runners, like it was with CR7. There are no such players at Arsenal except Walcott, who rarely plays. You can quote stats all you like about his key passes. In this Arsenal team Ramsey, Sanchez, Cazorla would've had better stats and a much better overall contribution than Ozil if they played as N10. I can name at least 3 players at Arsenal who would be better as No10 -

Ramsey - he's creative, a goal scorer, much better defensively, much better work rate,

Sanchez - well, he shits all over Ozil

Cazorla - he's already done it before and saved our asses in his first season at Arsenal

Everyone had a hard on anticipating a partnership between Sanchez and Ozil. But there isn't one (except maybe that goal vs Reading I think, in FA cup). Sanchez isn't really a winger. He's better suited to No10 position. If he played as a shadow striker behind Giroud he'd be scoring 30+ goals and getting 20+ assists per season.

If there was a bid of £40-50m for Ozil I'd sell him in a heart beat. And get a proper winger, be it Pedro, or even freaking Draxler, and have some money left over.

I remember when Cazorla was playing on the wing I was saying he'd be much better in central midfield. Everyone rolled their eyes. Even after Cazorla had an excellent game in that position against some Turkish club in CL. It's the sheepish mentality of many Arsenal fans, they just go into denial. Plus flogging Ozil would de congest the midfield a bit. If Sanchez and Ramsey were rotating in No10, Wishere would be getting more game time rotating with Cazorla in CM.

I know most would say something like "YOU'RE CLUELESS, OZIL IS WORLD CLASS". But they'd be the clueless ones, just a bunch of brainwashed puppets.

Besides no one's denying Ozil's quality, he's just not well suited to this Arsenal team. Plus we have better players than him.

On second thoughts don't close the thread - another 2 assists for Ozil today. Its good to embarrass the OP each game.

I've found Özil frustrating at times. He has seemed to have a variable work rate, with excellent days and off days. There's just no denying that he's been superb this season, though, creating tons of chances. He and Bellerin (what a pleasure it is to watch him blossom) are the players sparking the attack.

Wouldn't it be funny if someone replied "Your dad hitting it raw back then was a mistake" ? I've been waiting for four pages someone to come up with it but no.

That sounds like a joke a 10-year old would make, or some one of that mental age.

How old are you?

I'm glad that Ozil already has 9 assists in the league and I home he improves more. It's a shame it took him 2 full seasons to improve.

But buying him was still a mistake. The only plus I see is maybe if it somehow helped Arsenal to sign Sanchez.

My main problem with Ozil, as I've many times said, is that he doesn't fit into this team well and isn't playing to his full potential.

If I was criticising Sanchez, Aguero, David Silva or Hazard, calling them flops, no one would even bother talking to me, because that would be obvious stupidity.

But the fact so many people desperately defend Ozil shows that criticising him really hits home. It just show how desperate and deluded those people are.

11 And this thread is something a mentally disabled person would post. Are you alright in the head?

Or take the piss out of you, which everyone is doing here.

Lol the OP still cant let it go and admit his foolishness. Makes this thread even better :)

As for Ozils first 2 years, well he managed 14 assists in those two years in 46 games. That figure of 14 over two years ranks him in the top 10 of all players in the league over those 2 years.

In 2013/14 - his first year - he was joint 5th in the league in assists with 9, level with David Silva having played less games.

In 2014/15 despite only playing 21 games and being in and out with injury he created more chances per game than any other player in the league and during the run in was our best player.

No, Ozil was no mistake. The real mistake is this article.

In fact Ozil is also now providing assists on this thread for us to laugh at the OP.

All hail Ozil, the most creative player in world football AND rubbing the OPs nose (and others like him) in it every week.

And I'd still like to point out that assists aren't even that relevant, as Özil is only part of the equation in an assist. It doesn't become an assist until the assisted player converts the key pass into a goal. Which obviously depends more on the quality of the assisted player, not the assist itself.

Chances created and key passes are the two key metrics for playmakers, two fields where Özil is number one in the top five European leagues, and has been for years if I recall correctly.

His assist rate would inevitably go down when joining Arsenal, as we clearly don't have a "superstar" striker who scores 25+ league goals every season. Despite people thinking our firepower (goal conversion) is below-par, Özil still has a high assist count. Think about that for a minute. It means that despite the lack of "world-class" goal converters in the side, Özil is still one of the highest assisters in Europe.

Think how many goals Bayern, Dortmund, Real and Barca have scored this year. It's 33, 32, 24 and 22, respectively. And neither of them have a player in their squad with more assists than Özil, they don't even have a player that comes close.

Yep - think we can safely put this one to bed and proclaim Ozil the winner against his critics.

The top player at Arsenal and the most creative in world football. It is why Cazorla has had to be moved to a different position. The top spot as the creative hub of the team goes to Ozil, a class above.

Even with Giroud missing fabulous chances created by the genius Ozil, Ozil broke another all time PL record today for most consecutive games with assists.

Cazorla meanwhile was awful, as he has been most of the season. He is a good player though - not in Ozil's class - so I am hoping he can recover some form and contribute to the team in the second half of the season.

You kidding? Cazorla has been insane this season in midfield. Him and Ozil have been notching up some crazy passing stats and chances created. He was complaining of dizziness today and got subbed, wonder what happened.

Partially kidding yes. He has done a fairly good job this season in terms of the more defensive side, but his creativity has been below the level you would expect, his shooting and finishing has been poor and he has been guilty of giving the ball way in very dangerous areas far too often. Its a 6/10 for him so far this season. Compared to the majestic Ozil, his season has been pretty poor.
